A 72-year-old resident said she should have known better when a tree-trimming company booked a job on her property and asked for money on the spot. About $1,450 later, the woman, who lives alone, is left with a job only half done and wants other residents to know what to look out for when hiring contractors who solicit door to door. "I thought I was doing something good since a lot of people are out of work and I wanted to help them," she said.

Prosecutor Bob Chappell told Douglas County jurors on Tuesday they may never know why a pair of Douglas County High School graduates went on a massive crime spree in the summer of 2008. But, he says he does know why one of them decided to fire upon a Douglas County Sheriff's deputy early in the morning of June 28, 2008. "Getting caught for these two guys just was not an option," Chappell said during his closing arguments in the trial of one of the two accused.

It could be possible thanks to a new Google project. Four Johnson County communities have united to form the Iowa City Area Broadband Coalition (ICABC) in hopes that Google picks this area to be part of its first high-speed broadband network. Google's goal with these new networks is to figure out new ways to make internet access better and faster for everyone, according to information posted on its project overview website.

SOME of the best young cricketers in Huddersfield were invited to Yorkshire nets – two of whom went on to play for England. Primrose Hill all-rounder Ken Taylor and Almondbury spinner Eddie Leadbeater, who were 14 and 22 respectively at the time, eventually went all the way to the national Test team. Leadbeater was already a professional and had been netting at the Headingley winter shed under the guidance of coaches Arthur Mitchell and Bill Bowes.

Wielding a pipe, a man allegedly went after two transgender individuals on March 13. Via MPD listserv, Sergeant Carlos Mejia says the two victims were in the area of 14th and Shepherd Streets NW when a suspect decided to club them with metal. He says cops discovered the suspect attacked the victims because of their gender identity.

police could not confirm Taylor's address, but a state online court database lists Taylor, who was 19, with an address in Southeast Washington, D.C., in January 2009.   -Paul Starks
